The Finnish Sauna - From Finland and Beyond
A Finnish sauna is the typical mental picture that everyone
thinks about when sauna is mentioned. Unlike portable
far infrared
saunas, Finns use a small room or hut and heat the area inside with
wood, either in a wood burning stove with a chimney or with no chimney
at all. Most Finnish people generally prefer a hut without a
chimney. Once the fire has burned out and the smoke has escaped, the
sauna can be entered. Sauna History
The sauna throughout history hasn't just been with the Finns. There are
many other examples of similar rooms in cultures far from Finland. Some
examples of other types of saunas include the Japanese onsen, the
Turkish hamam, and the Russian banya. But of course, the country that
uses saunas more than anyone else is Finland. There are an estimated 2
million saunas available to the 5 million residents of that country.
